How to apply mascara correctly – here’s how

How to apply mascara correctly

Applying mascara correctly is possible – with a brush head perfectly shaped for your needs, the right texture, and practiced hands. Generally, your lashes should be free of oil before applying mascara. So, carefully apply your day or eye care around the eye and avoid rubbing directly over the eyelid. Before you start applying mascara, everything should be well absorbed.

Start with a small amount of mascara and better apply a second layer after the first has dried. Always wipe off excess mascara on a tissue and do not use the mascara container for this. These residues dry into crumbs that you pick up again the next time you apply mascara – not very conducive to a perfect finish. Some women like to start applying mascara in the middle of the upper lash line, others prefer the outer lash edge. Where you start doesn’t really matter. What’s important is that you distribute the mascara in gentle zig-zag movements through your lashes, working from the lash roots close to your skin, through the middle of the lashes, to the tips. The mascara is also worked into the lashes with gentle shaking movements (this step is especially important to achieve density and volume).

To give lashes more length, the mascara is also carefully pulled from the lash roots to the tips. Don’t forget to also apply mascara to the fine hairs on the inner lash line. For this, take only a little mascara and when brushing these hairs, look away from the brush tip and look in the opposite direction. This way your eyelid is stretched and smudges are prevented.

If you have large eyes, you can also emphasize the lower lashes strongly afterwards. Hold the brush head, covered with only a little mascara, close to the lower lash line and stroke from bottom to top. Shake a little here as well. Gentle zig-zag movements are so effective when applying mascara because they reach even the finest hairs and fully coat the lashes with mascara.

If you have small eyes, you should either lightly emphasize or not emphasize the lower lash line at all, as this would make the eyes appear even smaller. As a final step, let the lashes dry briefly, and for more volume, repeat the process. Have you now mastered the right technique? For the best results, you should now check if your brush head also suits your lashes well.

The right mascara for short and fine lashes

Mascara

Women with short and fine lashes often want everything at once: length, density, volume AND curl. If the lashes are also fine, every single hair counts for that wow eye effect. Thick brushes with a large surface that pick up a lot of mascara often lead to dreaded panda eyes with black, thick rings around the eyelids when applying mascara. A no-go that must be avoided! Especially women with short and fine lashes often tend to apply mascara two or three times for XXL volume. This often causes the lashes to clump into so-called spider legs, which are only acceptable at Halloween at best. Applying multiple layers of mascara is generally allowed. To avoid the spider leg look, you should let each mascara layer dry well in between. For a volume upgrade, curved brushes with many small, closely spaced bristles are better for short fine lashes. These are more suitable for reaching every tiny hair than brush heads with straight bristles. For more length, a wing-shaped brush with one-sided short bristles is also suitable. This distributes the mascara to the tips and visibly lengthens the lashes.

Another way to naturally lengthen lashes is our eyelash growth serum Superlative Lash. In combination with the right mascara, very good results can be achieved.

Short but dense lashes? This mascara is right for you

right mascara

Your lashes are short but dense? They basically just need a voluminous finish and a little more length wouldn’t hurt? Peanut-shaped brushes are very good for more length. By precisely separating the lashes, you prevent them from overlapping or sticking together. In addition, every hair is coated from root to tip. Due to the strict separation and even distribution of mascara, the lashes immediately appear longer and more defined.

Do you want to give your lashes not only more length but also a special curl?
With mascara brushes that have an S-shaped curved tip, both are possible. You not only reach every hair (such as the fine lashes on the inner corner of the eye), but also create a slight curl. Crescent-shaped brushes are also perfect for giving lashes a slight lift while applying mascara. If you want even more curl, you can use an eyelash curler beforehand. This should never be done with already mascara-coated lashes! Curling mascara-coated lashes afterwards will almost certainly lead to lash breakage and lash loss in the medium term.

You should also avoid curling your lashes every day with the curler. A good eyelash curler features a high-quality silicone pad, a design shape adapted to the eye, and high-quality metal that is also suitable for allergy-prone eyes. Not every eyelash curler is suitable for every eye shape, so be sure to pay attention to the size of your eye socket when buying. It’s best to warm the eyelash curler in your closed hand for a few seconds before use. Then carefully place it as close as possible to your lash line and bend the lashes into shape. Hold for a few seconds while bending, repeat if necessary.

Long and dense lashes – this brush head works

long and dense lashes

Your lashes are long and dense and naturally have a slight curl? Congratulations! To give your lashes a bit more definition, mascara brushes with an elliptical brush head are very suitable. These also prevent annoying spider legs that often appear especially in the middle of the lash line when applying mascara multiple times. For stronger fanning and a more open and radiant look, you can also use a conical brush head. This surrounds every hair with mascara and gives especially the lashes at the outer corner of the eye even more volume. The eyes appear larger, the gaze is opened and looks more intense and radiant.

Applying mascara: What mistakes can be made?

Mistakes when applying mascara

You apply your mascara in neat zig-zag movements (starting close to the lash line, then pulling towards the tip), carefully coat the fine hairs at the inner corner of the eye with mascara, then apply mascara to the lower lashes by placing the brush head parallel to the lash line and slowly brushing down the hairs and… still constantly smudge? The mascara lands on your lashes but also on many other places? If this keeps happening, you should ask yourself the following questions: Is the brush head of your mascara the right one for you? Does it fit your eye shape, do you really reach every hair easily, or does your morning makeup ritual often go wrong? Is the texture suitable for your makeup goals or does it clump and is hard to dose? Do your eyes start to tear and constant blinking and wiping make daily mascara application a real ordeal?

If your eyes also start to tear when applying mascara, you should stop using it immediately. You may be allergic to one or more ingredients in your mascara. The right brush head is important because ideally it fits your eye shape perfectly and turns fine hairs into super lashes with XXL volume. A high-quality texture that doesn’t crumble, spreads easily, and lasts all day is also an important factor to turn mascara frustration into a real mascara wow experience in no time.

You avoid crumb chaos by slowly twisting the brush head in the mascara container instead of pumping it in when you want to pick up new mascara. This prevents air from entering the container and keeps the mascara fresh and smooth longer. Have you already followed all these tips but still have smudge chaos? Then only practice, practice, practice helps. With a particularly narrow mascara brush, even beginners can achieve their first mascara successes. Cotton swabs soaked in cleansing lotion make removing mascara mishaps quick and easy.

Prime Time - Lash Primer for even more wow volume

Can’t get enough of lash volume? Then try a “primer,” also called “mascara base” or “foundation.” Primers were previously known mainly from the makeup area. A primer is applied as a base to conceal redness but also to make the subsequent makeup last longer. This principle works very well for lush beautiful lashes too. The primer is the first step for lashes in XXL format. The mostly transparent or white, gel-like or mascara-like texture lays like a film on the lashes and gives them not only fullness, density, and length but also makes the subsequent mascara last much longer.

Many primers also contain nourishing ingredients that protect the sensitive lashes from drying out. This way, not only can you give your everyday look a little more drama, but you can also create real runway looks. This “layering principle” for lashes is not new: already in the 60s, for lashes in the “Twiggy style,” named after the then it-girl, style icon, and supermodel Lesley “Twiggy” Hornby, deep tricks were used. For the real Twiggy signature look, artificial lashes had to be applied, coated, and sometimes even painted with strong black lines on the lower lash line. Twiggy herself sometimes wore up to three layers of artificial lashes stacked. For an everyday it-girl look, baby powder helped, a trick that still works today: first, the lashes were heavily coated with mascara, then a layer of baby powder was applied. After drying, the lashes were coated again. This could be repeated as often as needed for the distinctive sixties look focusing on doll eyes and pastel lips.

Those who don’t want powder and mascara crumbs today better use modern lash primers. The handling of these new beauty helpers is so easy that you can hardly do anything wrong. The only important thing is to allow some time for the base to dry completely between applying the primer and the mascara.

Classic black or color flash – the right color for the right moment

Color Flash

The first commercially available mascara consisted of petroleum jelly and coal. The color? Naturally black! The classic among mascara colors not only gives the eyes that certain something but also makes the lashes appear denser and longer. For a softer look and a more natural result, many women swear by brown mascara. Transparent mascara is now also an option for anyone who wants to give their lashes structure but no color. Those who like color now have a wide selection: dark blue lashes were really trendy in the 80s but can also provide a welcome change in the predominantly black mascara everyday. Unless you are on your way to an 80s theme party, the rest of the makeup should be kept rather subtle. Violet, dark gray, and dark green have also been seen on runways from time to time in recent years. For everyday use, colored mascara is suitable as an eye-catching highlight on the tips. To do this, first apply black or brown mascara as usual and then apply the colored mascara only to the tips.

Mascara for problem lashes

Mascara for problem lashes

It cannot be repeated often enough: a perfect makeup requires thorough cleansing in the evening. Even if it’s annoying, the skin must be freed from all makeup and dirt residues in the evening. Only then can it breathe and regenerate overnight. Neglecting evening cleansing in the long term can lead not only to blemishes and pimples but also, in the worst case, to lash breakage and loss. You should also always be gentle when cleansing your eye area and avoid rubbing too hard. To have supple, shiny, and healthy lashes in the long term, you should regularly give your lashes an extra dose of care.

More about this can be found in our blog post “Eyelash Care.”

Just a few drops are enough to achieve quick results. There are now also special care mascaras based on castor oil that are particularly easy to apply. This prevents lash breakage and gives your lashes the care they urgently need with daily mascara application.
