1. Perfect Wave: Why the Hype Around Eyelash Perming is So Big

Are your eyelashes mainly one thing: straight and lifeless? Are you generally satisfied with your volume, even if a little density upgrade wouldn’t bother you? How about an eyelash perm for yourself? You may have already heard of eyelash perming but never dared to try the method. Don’t worry: Unlike the perm for head hair, which results in those pesky little ringlets that don’t want to leave your hair for months, the eyelash perm is quite different. With an eyelash perm, the entire lash line is bent upwards over a rod, leaving nothing but a breathtaking curl at the end.

Are you already a pro in eyelash styling and have tried all the trends: The lash lift, where the lashes are lifted and then fixed so they appear longer overall? Are you familiar with eyelash extensions and love to glue fake lashes onto your own for even more length? Or do you prefer wearing fake lashes to have fuller and denser lashes, resulting in every onlooker thinking: “Wow! I want that too”?

Even if you have never heard of all these trends and treatments, you notice: For a few years now, there has been a real craze around the fine hairs on our eyelids, which, when styled correctly, become stunningly sexy eye-catchers. Various methods have emerged that are gaining more and more followers and fans worldwide.

Have you taken it easy when styling your lashes so far? More than a lash serum for a bit more length and density hasn’t been your thing yet? You haven’t been interested in elaborate lash procedures at the studio or at home? Whether you are a super pro or a reluctant beginner: An eyelash perm is an interesting option for the lash expert to give their own lashes a little break between extensions and various other beauty treatments, allowing the lashes to recover from the glue of false lashes. At least a little. Because: chemical solutions are also used in eyelash perming, which first soften the hair structure and then fix it in the new position. For those inexperienced in eyelash styling, an eyelash perm is an uncomplicated way to enter the world of lashes. Learn everything about eyelash perming and what special advantage it has over other methods here!

2. What is an Eyelash Perm?

An eyelash perm is a beauty treatment where your own (!) lashes are given a light or strong curl depending on your wishes. The eyelash perm is suitable for all lash types – whether short, medium, or long, there is a suitable rod for every lash length around which the lashes are bent during the treatment.

Usually, an eyelash perm is done by an expert in a studio who not only has the right equipment but (ideally) also many years of experience. What we can’t keep to ourselves and what you may have already guessed: Yes, an eyelash perm can also be done as a DIY project at home. All you need is a starter kit with various solutions, sticks, rods, and possibly brushes. Are you interested in an eyelash perm but unsure whether to go to a professional studio or do the treatment yourself at home?

3. Eyelash Perm in the Studio

The expert in the studio brings: many years of experience. But not only that. A studio with a relaxed atmosphere that guarantees a pleasant stay and the use of hygienically flawless accessories are two other important components that make our eyelash perm experience a real highlight. Many studios also perform an allergy test beforehand to ensure there are no allergies to the ingredients used.

In the studio, you can get comfortable with calm music while the expert transforms your eyes into real eye-catchers. She is also the one who can tell you exactly which lash rod size is best for your lash length: Size S is the right size for a strong lift, especially suitable for short lashes, size M is ideal for a medium lift, perfect for normal lashes, and size L results in a slight lift, which is very suitable for long lashes.

Here’s how the eyelash perm works: If you wear contact lenses, you must remove them first. Your eye area is first thoroughly cleaned with an oil-free facial toner to remove makeup, dirt, and sweat. Then your lashes are briefly brushed through to ensure they are free of residues and thoroughly separated. Then a silicone pad is applied to the lower eye area near the lower lash line to prevent the lower lashes from being accidentally included in the treatment.

Next, the appropriate lash rod is applied to the lashes. You have chosen the right lash rod size when the lashes cover half of the rod. By bending the rod back and forth several times, it takes the curvature of the eyelid and can be applied more easily. If the lash rod is too long, the expert cuts it at one end so it perfectly fits your eye shape. From now on, you must keep your eyes closed! Using a wooden stick, the beautician now individually (!) rolls the lashes over the rod. The expert will ensure that the lashes do not cross and that even particularly stubborn lashes find their place on the lash rod.

Then a lotion is applied to the lashes that softens the hair structure and makes it moldable (it smells a bit like the perm solution at the hairdresser). The lotion must work for 10–12 minutes, but depending on the thickness of the lashes, the processing time can be extended or shortened accordingly. The lotion is then removed with a cotton swab. Next, another lotion is applied to fix the lashes, which again must work for 10–12 minutes. Waiting again… But: you can relax and already look forward to your result! The lash rod is then dabbed off with a water-soaked cloth. The moisture causes the glue to dissolve, and the lash rod can be removed. The expert slightly stretches the eyelid and slowly rolls off the lash rod. At this point, there is the option to tint the lashes in an additional step. Due to the pre-treatment, the color only needs to work for two minutes now. Whether with or without the tinting step: At the end of the treatment, the lashes must be cleaned again with a damp cotton pad, and then a light care product is applied for a silky shine.

Done! You have now achieved your goal of perfect lashes with a strong curl. At about 35 euros, it’s even quite affordable.

4. Eyelash Perm at Home

You dare – the eyelash perm for home? If you have a steady hand with eyeliner, fake lashes, and the like, you should be able to manage a DIY eyelash perm well. If you have had rather mixed results in the past, you might want to leave this task to your best friend. What you need is a set that contains everything the expert in the studio also has: silicone pads, lash rods, wooden or plastic sticks, and of course the various solutions applied to the lashes.

At the start of the treatment, you should remove your contact lenses if you wear any. Then you should thoroughly clean your eye area from makeup and dirt before starting the eyelash perm. Stick silicone pads on your lower eye area so that only the upper lashes are treated during the perm. Start with one eye: stick a lash rod matching your lash length and bend your lashes individually over the rods. Then apply the first solution to your lashes and leave it on for 12–15 minutes. After the processing time, clean your lashes with a cotton swab. Now comes the second step: applying the fixing solution, which holds the lashes in their new position long-term.

Let this work for 12–15 minutes as well and then clean your lashes again with a cotton swab. Remove the glue with a water-soaked cotton pad.

The eyelash perm kit for home costs between 38 and 70 euros. However, kits at the higher end of the price range contain up to 20 lash rods. This means the cost per application is only a fraction of what you pay in the studio.

5. How Long Does an Eyelash Perm Last?

An eyelash perm lasts up to 6 weeks. However, this depends on individual lash growth, the quality of the treatment, and daily care of the treated lashes.

6. Eyelash Perm vs. Lash Lift

Admittedly, the two methods are similar in many ways. While in lash lifting the lashes are bent straight upwards, in eyelash perming they are bent in an arc over the rod. Lash lifting is a real gain for anyone dissatisfied with their own lash length and who prefers a treatment without artificial lashes. It works especially close to the lash line, resulting in a particularly strong effect. Eyelash perming, on the other hand, is an option for those who are basically satisfied with their lash length but want a stronger curl.

7. Advantages and Disadvantages of Both Methods

The eyelash perm makes the daily use of an eyelash curler unnecessary. Already in the morning, you make a strong impression with a clearly visible curl. This is not only a real help for everyone annoyed by the daily curling ritual but also for those who suffer from a nickel allergy and want to avoid using an eyelash curler.

Mascara? An option, but no longer a must! A lash lift lifts the lashes and visibly lengthens them. However, it still requires the use of an eyelash curler for the necessary curl. The advantage of both methods is that no false lashes or other artificial elements are used. Since the eyelash perm gives the lashes a gentle arc shape, the result looks especially natural here.

Another advantage of treatments without artificial lashes is that no lashes fall out of the lash line (which can happen in the middle of a conversation with your boss or colleague – embarrassing!).

A disadvantage is that the eyelash perm, contrary to what is often stated, lasts less long for some women. After just 2 or 3 weeks, the curl may barely be visible. This can be due to improper treatment or the individual lash growth: If you are blessed with fast-growing lashes, your eyelash perm will not last as long.

8. Who is an Eyelash Perm Not Suitable For?

An eyelash perm cannot be performed if your lashes have already been treated with extensions or thickening. The chemicals used in the eyelash perm would dissolve the glue and ruin the look. For those with sensitive eyes, an eyelash perm (like all treatments performed very close to the eye) can cause irritation and redness.

Therefore, it is advisable to do an allergy test beforehand to check if any reactions are expected. Even if you have had allergic reactions to a similar treatment before, it is possible that you will also react to the eyelash perm. You may not tolerate the glue or other ingredients that irritate your skin or mucous membranes.

9. Conclusion

Different methods have now established themselves in the field of eyelash styling, all aiming to get the best out of lashes for a seductive look. The eyelash perm is a procedure that is not only relatively inexpensive but also provides a naturally beautiful result. Since the eyelash perm can be applied to any lash length, it is an option for every lash type to get the maximum out of their own lashes. An eyelash perm is also a real introductory treasure price-wise, as you can achieve breathtaking results for about 30–40 euros.

Doing the eyelash perm yourself is possible for those with steady and practiced hands. Since you can only work on one eye at a time, this is much more difficult than when the expert in the studio works on your closed eyelids. The most convincing argument for doing the eyelash perm at home is probably the price. Also, with a little practice, you can skip the appointments at the beautician, where you have to lie still for up to an hour, with the DIY eyelash perm.
