Lash Lifting – how lashes become naturally longer

Eyelash perm, eyelash extensions, lash lifting – are you already fluent in "lashes"? The currently most commonly used trendy term in beauty talk: lash lifting or "Lash Lifting". As the name suggests, the lashes are permanently lifted. But what procedure is behind this new trendy term? Can you do a lash lift yourself? And is lash lifting harmful? For everyone who has no lash lifting experience yet and wonders if lash lifting is harmful: Here you will learn everything you need to know about "lash lifting" and "doing lash lifting yourself".

1. Everyone wants it: What exactly is lash lifting?

lash lifting

Everyone who generally rejects fake eyelashes can relax: Lash lifting uses your own natural lashes as the starting point. Unlike eyelash extensions, no foreign lashes are glued on here; only your own lashes are bent upwards. The advantage of a (chemically fixed) lash lift is that it not only lifts the lashes long-term and visually lengthens them, but also lasts a really long time. For a few weeks, it means "goodbye eyelash curler" and mascara can also temporarily disappear deep in our beauty bag.

Whether in the studio or doing eyelash lifting yourself: eyelash lifting experiences can be gained equally in the beauty salon or at home. Basically, eyelash lifting works with 2–3 different textures that are applied to the lashes one after the other. In keratin eyelash lifting, the first solution opens the keratin layer of the lashes.   The second solution fixes the lashes in the new position and ensures long-lasting hold. Third comes either a special cleaning product or a treatment. Doing eyelash lifting yourself: sounds tempting. If you are skilled at working close to and safely around your eyes, eyelash lifting on your own might be the right choice for you.

2. Here's how - our guide: do eyelash lifting yourself
 do eyelash lifting yourself

You can't get it out of your head: Doing eyelash lifting yourself? But you don't have any eyelash lifting experience yet?  Admittedly, unlike perhaps monthly hair coloring or eyebrow shaping, doing eyelash lifting yourself is not exactly one of the common standard beauty rituals.

You should also ask yourself beforehand: Can you literally curl your lashes into shape with an eyelash curler in your sleep? Does your eyeliner always land exactly where it should? What sounds funny can literally go wrong and hurt you when doing eyelash lifting yourself. Because with eyelash lifting, you use chemical helpers that should definitely not get into your eyes. Is eyelash lifting harmful? Then definitely! If you cannot confidently say yes, maybe your best friend should do the job instead.

What do you definitely need? A lash lifting set, cleansed facial skin, and a mirror.

The most important thing at the beginning of every "do-it-yourself eyelash lifting" project: The face and especially the eye area must be completely cleaned, clean, and free of grease. Some eyelash lifting kits also include a primer specifically for this purpose, which not only cleans the lashes but also prepares them for the subsequent treatment. If there is still makeup or oil on your eyelids, the silicone pads you will be working with will come loose during the treatment. This is not only annoying but also carries the risk that one of the textures might get into your eye. Oh no! A little secret tip at this point:  If you already curl your lashes upwards with an eyelash curler now, it will be easier later. Because the lashes are already bent and can be more easily placed over the silicone pad afterwards.

And here we go with gaining experience in eyelash lifting!

Step 1: Glue silicone pads onto the upper eye area

If you have already gained eyelash lifting experience, you know this: In the first step, silicone pads are glued onto the upper eye area. Some kits allow you to choose between three different sizes: S, M, and L. The pad should be selected depending on lash length (the shorter your lashes, the flatter the gel pad should be), eye shape, and desired lash effect. Do you have long lashes and want a strong curl? Then you can work with the largest size. If you have short lashes or only want a slight lift, the smallest size is the better choice. You should also consider beforehand how much you want your lashes to be bent. Straight up? Or just a gentle lift? The right pad is crucial for your result.

Stick the half-round, flat gel pads onto the upper eye area. This can be done either with self-adhesive pads or with the included glue. If the pads are not self-adhesive, apply a small amount of glue to the pads and stick them onto your upper eyelid. It works best if you tilt your head as far back as possible while doing this. Now press the pad for at least 20 seconds so that it sticks securely and does not come off. Be careful not to accidentally stick the pad onto your lashes! It should only align with your eyelid edge! The gel pads are usually shaped to fit the eye effortlessly and, with proper handling, perfectly align with the upper eyelid. Do your own eyelash lifting – Step 1: Done! You have now had your first eyelash lifting experience.

Step 2: Apply lotion or glue

For the next step, there are several options in the script "Do Your Own Eyelash Lifting": In keratin eyelash lifting, a milky-white lotion is first applied that softens the keratin layer of the lashes, making them pliable and preparing them for the subsequent bending and fixing. In keratin-free eyelash lifting, the glue is applied directly to the lashes. These are then individually bent upwards onto the cushion stuck to the eyes (yes, INDIVIDUALLY. You read that right, we’ll get to that shortly). Or you apply the glue to the pad and then bend the lashes individually upwards. How do you manage to separate and bend individual lashes upwards? The best way is with the included tool, a plastic stick, or a used eyebrow comb. If you already have eyelash lifting experience, you know that unlike the eyelash perm, where lashes are first bent forward and then upwards, in eyelash lifting the lashes are bent and lifted straight upwards from the root—similar to what an eyelash curler does.

Each texture applied to the lashes for the eyelash lift should not be left on longer than described in the package insert, and not longer than 15 minutes, as otherwise you risk irritation and the eyelash lift can become harmful to your lashes.  You should best remove the pads and remaining glue with an oil. If your set includes a special cleanser, you can use it to clean your lashes. In general, you should now wait 24–48 hours before exposing your lashes to water and care products.

3. Lift off: Eyelash lifting in the studio

eyelash lifting in the studio

At the professional's, everything basically happens just like your DIY session at home. The difference: ideally, they have endless experience with eyelash lifting. Of course, you lie comfortably here and stay in this position for about the next 45–60 minutes. After receiving extensive advice regarding shape, intensity, and procedure, lying down comfortably and closing your eyes, it can begin. The professional also works with several textures, which they apply to the lashes one after another.

Many eyelash lifting fans have their lashes tinted as a final step for an especially expressive finish. Of course, you can also do this at home. (Link to the eyelash tinting blog)

With lifting, you can't achieve as long, full, and dense an eye look as with eyelash extensions. However, an eyelash lift is a very good choice for anyone who would like longer lashes but wants to rely exclusively on their own natural lashes. It is also a good option as a break between eyelash extensions to give your lashes a rest from fake lashes. And why not try out eyelash lifting after all those eyelash extensions! Even after the treatment in the studio, you should wait up to 24 hours before letting your lashes come into contact with water and care products.

4. Eyelash upgrade in the studio or DIY eyelash lifting: What experiences are there?

eyelash lifting experiences

The expert in the studio has it: the eyelash lifting experience, skilled hands, and professional equipment. The professional can advise you not only regarding your desired result but also concerning irritations and potential allergies.

She can also advise you on the condition of your eyelashes and tell you if eyelash lifting is harmful to your lashes. It is important that the professional in the studio gives you a good feeling right from the start. Does the person opposite you look like they have successfully undergone the treatment offered? Is the studio well maintained? If both are true, you are in the right place. If neither applies, you should perhaps switch to another address.

Once you have chosen the expert of your choice, we can relax during the treatment and look forward to a perfect result. However, many people find it uncomfortable to lie still for so long and have a more or less stranger fiddling with their eyes. For those who generally prefer to take matters into their own hands, the price difference between studio treatment and DIY might also be tempting: while a professional session in the studio costs 50–80 euros, a starter kit for DIY eyelash lifting is available from 20 euros. It also allows you to get comfortable in your familiar environment and do the eyelash lifting completely relaxed by yourself.

5. How much does an eyelash lifting cost and how long does it last?

In the studio, an eyelash lifting costs between 49 and 69 euros depending on where you live, and is significantly cheaper than a professional eyelash extension with false lashes. A starter kit for doing eyelash lifting yourself is available from 20 euros.

6. Is eyelash lifting harmful – Are there side effects?

When applied properly, eyelash lifting is generally not harmful and there are no side effects. Ideally, you know in advance whether you are allergic to the ingredients or not.

It becomes critical if one of the solutions gets into the eye. When visiting the studio, you can be sure that your eyes will be properly taped and your eyelashes professionally treated. If you accidentally get something in your eye while doing eyelash lifting yourself, do not hesitate and rinse it immediately with lukewarm, clear water. If you notice burning on your eyelids during your DIY eyelash session, stop the treatment immediately. Burning, itching, or redness are signs that you are intolerant to one or more of the ingredients. Ignoring these warning signs risks real damage to your skin and eyes.

7. Advantages and disadvantages of a lash lift

Advantages

  • Unlike with lash extensions, you don’t have to fear that false lashes will fall off your eyes.
  • A lash lifting works like our lash serum for short lashes.
  • A lash lift lasts up to 6 weeks depending on hair growth and (unlike lash extensions) does not cause gaps in the lashes.
  • Unlike with a lash wave, the lashes are not bent. The lash lift is therefore a gentle and effective method to achieve more lash volume in a short time.

Disadvantages

  • With the lifting, you cannot achieve as long, full, and dense a look as with lash extensions.
  • Even though the lash lift is gentler than constantly wearing lash extensions: chemical substances are also used here.
  • Especially without lash lift experience, it can be that the result of doing a lash lift yourself is anything but perfect due to lack of lash lifting experience.
  • In the studio, the treatment is performed by a professional on the closed eye, who usually already has a lot of lash lift experience. When doing a lash lift yourself, you have to keep one eye closed while working on the other eye with as steady a hand as possible.

8. FAQ about lash lifts

Is the lash lift harmful?

This question arises right at the beginning when it comes to lash lifts. Generally, however, the lash lift is not harmful. Still, as with all cosmetic treatments, you should not overdo it and give your lashes enough time to regenerate between treatments. In the studio, the professional ensures that the treatment is carried out as gently and safely as possible. When doing a lash lift yourself, it is up to you to take care of your safety and eye health.

Do lashes break off during a lash lift?

Healthy lashes are generally not affected by the treatment of a lash lift. If your lashes are already heavily stressed, the lash lift can be harmful to your lashes and you should better avoid it. Nevertheless, you should always treat your lashes very gently and also be careful to proceed as gently as possible when doing a lash lift yourself.

Is it advisable to do a lash lift yourself?

Even if a DIY lash lift is not exactly on the beauty agenda: Doing a lash lift yourself is generally possible. Before application, you should be aware of your own dexterity; otherwise, the lash lift can be harmful to your lashes and eyes. If you have a steady hand, there is nothing against performing a lash lift yourself.
