Through thick and thin: Beauty hotspot eyebrows

Eyebrow shapes keep changing again and again. Eyebrows are anything but just inconspicuous arches that protect our eyes from sweat and dirt. With the right tools, the fine hairs become eye-catchers that – depending on the current trend – can be more or less bushy. By now, even the biggest beauty skeptic should have realized: Thinly plucked arches are out, bushy big brows are super in.

This is good news for everyone annoyed by regular plucking. Thin eyebrows with only sparse hairs therefore need appropriate support for the perfect Insta look. And even eyebrows that are already (almost) perfect in their natural state look simply even more beautiful with a little beauty support from brow powder and co.  But it takes skill to properly shape eyebrows. Perfectly shaped eyebrows – yes, please! But how? The good news: Perfectly shaping eyebrows is not as difficult as it seems at first.

1. Determine the perfect eyebrow shape

The perfect eyebrow shape – what does that even mean?

The perfect eyebrow shape not only flatters your face but is THE foundation for properly shaping your eyebrows. Ideally, the right eyebrow shape makes you look several years younger and overall more dynamic. But how do you find the perfect shape for your face? This trick makes it very easy: All you need is a pencil.

1. You determine the starting point like this:
Take a pencil and hold it vertically against the side of your nose, pointing upwards towards your eyebrows. Where the pencil crosses the inner side of your eyebrows is the point where your eyebrows should begin. To perfectly shape your eyebrows and avoid a strange-looking result, you should under no circumstances draw beyond this point. Your eyebrows will then be too close together. The result not only looks unnatural but, in the worst case, also unintentionally funny.

2. This is how you find the highest point:
Take the pencil and place it to the right of your nose. Now draw it slightly to the right, towards your eyebrow arch. Where the pencil tip crosses your eyebrow is the highest point of your eyebrow.

3. This is how easily you determine the endpoint of your eyebrows:
Take the pencil and place it again to the right of your nose. Now draw it diagonally to the right towards the ends of your eyebrows. Where the pencil crosses your eyebrow is the lowest and thus the endpoint of your eyebrows. You should never draw them lower than this.

Your eyebrow shape is now determined and you can properly makeup your eyebrows.

2. Properly makeup your eyebrows

Perfectly makeup eyebrows – here’s how

You see a proud wearer of strikingly perfect eyebrows and wonder: Why can she properly makeup her eyebrows – and you can't?

First the bad news: The lady with the wonderful eyebrow arches probably not only has real style skills but also definitely spent a little time in the morning properly applying her eyebrow makeup. The good news? You can also perfectly makeup your eyebrows! What you need for this, we explain here:

Eyebrow pencil

Of course, nothing much works on the beauty front without it: a sharp eyebrow pencil is essential for well-defined eyebrows. The right color for an eyebrow pencil for your eyebrows is when it is about 1–2 shades darker than your eyebrows. Eyebrow makeup always starts at the lower edge of your eyebrow arches: Place the (well-sharpened) pencil on the lower contour of your eyebrow arch and gently stroke from bottom to top in the direction of your natural eyebrow growth. Proceed carefully and with only light pressure: pressing too hard while applying eyebrow makeup can quickly lead to a harsh and extremely unnatural result. Also, when touching up the top of your eyebrows, avoid too much pressure and, if necessary, only touch up individual hairs. Can't get great results with an eyebrow pencil? Don't worry – there are other alternatives to perfectly makeup your eyebrows.

Eyebrow gel

It's a bit easier with a colored eyebrow gel. Since an eyebrow gel usually comes with a small brush that is used to brush the gel into the hairs, it is almost impossible to achieve an unnatural result. Another advantage is that with an eyebrow gel you catch all the hairs, visibly add volume to your eyebrows, without drawing too harsh contours.

There are eyebrow gels with color and without color: A transparent eyebrow gel is not only great for fixing eyebrows shaped with brow powder, but also for brushing eyebrows that naturally have a nice color into shape.

Brow powder

With brow powder, you can achieve both: a full, dense, yet soft brow look that does not appear too heavily drawn. You can naturally makeup your eyebrows this way, and light brows can be given a more expressive finish.

Natural eyebrow makeup? Here's how: Take an eyebrow brush and gently dip it once into the brow powder. Tap off excess brow powder on the back of your hand or a cosmetic tissue. Now gently stroke your eyebrows in the direction of growth. If necessary, pick up new powder and tap off the excess again beforehand.

Due to the fine soft brush, especially natural results can be achieved. However, heavily plucked and bald spots are difficult to fill in this way. For these areas, an eyebrow pencil with a hard tip is better suited.

Eyebrow stamp

Yes, you read that right: just like with potato printing in craft class, we can now stamp our eyebrows. In an eyebrow stamp set, you will find not only two stamps in eyebrow shape but also a small box full of solid brow powder. This is how the brow instant miracle is supposed to work:

1. Press the brow stamp into the brow powder. If it does not pick up enough color, do not just press but also pull it back and forth a few times.

2. Place the stamp on the inner side of the eyebrow, position it, and press the stamp onto the eyebrow.

Anyone who thinks perfect eyebrow makeup is no longer a problem is mistaken. What sounds like a real beauty miracle at first glance actually has quite a few pitfalls. Even though the stamp comes in various shapes: the very simple stamp design does not do justice to the many natural eyebrow shapes in the world. It is therefore almost impossible to achieve a perfect result that does not require further correction afterwards. However, if you have no problem with that and see the stamp merely as a small time-saving beauty aid, the latest brow tool might be a real alternative for you.

Wig Brows – Wigs for the eyes

In the lineup of eyebrow tools that take some getting used to, these must not be missing: eyebrow wigs that eliminate the need for eyebrow makeup. Originally developed to restore eyebrows to burn victims, these practical little beauty helpers are currently conquering the beauty universe. These adhesive strips with human hairs are glued onto your own eyebrows for a wow result.

4. Wow brows like the stars: With these trends, you've got the hang of it

Admittedly: since Cara Delevingne brought XXL eyebrows back into the beauty cosmos at the beginning of the decade, trends have been changing at lightning speed. Keeping track is not so easy. However, nothing has generally changed about brow volume: big is (still) beautiful

Instagram Brows

While in 2016 the "Instagram Brows" were the highlight of almost every Instagram beauty eye area, they are definitively out in 2019. Meanwhile, natural looks have prevailed again that don’t look like you stuck a stencil on your own eyebrows. No wonder: despite all the variety, many value naturally made-up eyebrows.

Boy Brows

Precisely plucked, perfectly stroked, and carefully brushed? That was yesterday. In 2019, we wear our eyebrows boyish, straight, and wild. Fill in all gaps with an eyebrow pencil and lightly trace the brows on their underside. Then also draw a few fake hairs on the inner sides of the eyebrows – but don’t overdo it! Then brush all hairs upwards and to the side (the final result should look as bushy yet straight as possible) and fix in place. Done!

Woke up like this: This is how the Look à la Beyoncé

Oh yes, we love Beyoncé for so many reasons. One of those reasons is certainly her super-natural "I never pluck!" eyebrow shape. Natural eyebrow makeup? Beyoncé invented it! While Beyoncé naturally surrounds herself with a team of stylists who leave no hair to chance even with the natural eyebrow look, we can only do one thing: keep our hands off the tweezers and let the eyebrows grow. Only the fine hairs in the middle of the eyebrows may be carefully plucked. For unsightly gaps that disrupt a harmonious brow line, a serum can help support the natural growth of hairs and fill in bald spots. What else does Beyoncé do for perfect eyebrow makeup? Not much. The eyebrows are simply brushed into shape against (!) the growth direction with transparent brow gel.

For an especially natural look, it is also suitable to work with two different eyebrow powder shades. Start with the lighter powder on the inner side of your eyebrows and work it in with a small brush. After about one third, apply the darker eyebrow powder. Your eyebrows are now naturally enhanced without looking overly drawn on.

Straightforward: eyebrows like Miley Cyrus

Admittedly, Miley Cyrus has tried various styles and the 26-year-old has never really been reserved with her makeup either. What she has stuck to for some time, however, are almost straight plucked eyebrows that taper noticeably narrow at the end. This eyebrow shape fits very well with heart-shaped faces but requires some practice when plucking. To do this, pluck the hairs at the lower eyebrow edge diagonally upwards to the right from the highest point of the eyebrow. Doing your eyebrows like Miley is quite simple: then trace the eyebrows with an eyebrow pencil and gently brush in the direction of growth with an eyebrow brush.

Statement brows like Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez loves it: dramatic makeup with that certain something. She makes no compromises with her eyebrows and goes for strongly accentuated, bold, and angular arches. These emphasize her eye area and at the same time give the whole face more contour. Not on the to-do list: natural eyebrow makeup. What Jennifer does instead when doing her eyebrows is to trace them about 2.3 shades darker than her hair color. Enough to highlight the eyebrows to the highest degree, but still harmonious enough to avoid unsightly artificial bars.

For statement brows in the La Lopez look, apply an eyebrow powder 2–3 shades darker than your own eyebrows with a brush. Then brush the hairs from the middle of the eyebrows against the direction of growth, done.

All well and good – you have found the perfect eyebrow shape for your face, you now know how to perfectly apply eyebrow makeup, and you have chosen a style. However, is the daily routine too time-consuming for you? Would you prefer a long-term solution?

4. Prefer long-term alternatives: Permanent Makeup

A drastic method is to tattoo the eyebrows for a long-lasting finish. In permanent makeup, mineral or synthetic color pigments are injected into the skin surface above the small blood vessels. Although it is not done as deep as with a normal tattoo, the result is still permanent. Properly applying eyebrow makeup? You won’t have to deal with that after the treatment.

Daily eyebrow makeup is then no longer necessary, but a natural result is often not achieved with permanent makeup. Unforgettable are the permanent makeup results where the eyebrows seem to permanently float above the spot where the eyebrows actually grow… Brrrr.

Permanent makeup lasts up to three years – so the visit to the expert should be well considered. Over the years, other long-term methods have developed that sometimes produce results as if you had naturally applied eyebrow makeup.

Microblading

An advancement of permanent makeup is the so-called microblading, a tattooing technique where small strokes are scratched into the top layer of skin with a fine scalpel (English blade = blade), which are then filled with pigment color. Since nothing vibrates here and the expert can draw such fine hairs, this creates hairs with a 3D effect that look as if they were real. However, this is only the case if the expert has a lot of skill and a sense of your hair growth direction.

Nano-Blading

The difference from microblading is the much finer blades used in nanoblading. This makes it possible to draw even finer lines and even create a feathery natural look. But not only that: because the blades are finer, this also results in less pain during the treatment and faster healing afterward.

Eyebrow Tinting

The advantage of eyebrow tinting? Eyebrow makeup is no longer necessary after the treatment. The color lasts up to four weeks, and we can sleep in longer in the morning for up to four weeks since the use of eyebrow gel, powder, and the like is no longer needed.

If you also want to tint your eyelashes, you can read all about it in our article "Tinting Eyelashes Yourself".

You see: To perfectly apply eyebrow makeup, it doesn't take much. Find your statement look with the help of our tips.
