No time or desire to put on makeup? Still want a quick glam to go? Lipstick is probably the only beauty tool whose application takes hardly any time but instantly makes us look more awake, feminine, and wonderful. The right shade not only brings life to our lips but also makes our entire complexion glow! And not only that – bluish shades also instantly create brighter and whiter teeth!
Of course, a classic red suits every woman. Nowadays, however, lipsticks come in all imaginable colors and forms. Whether classic lipstick, lip crayon (this lipstick looks like a giant crayon, and the color stick cannot be twisted up), lip tint (tinted lip balm), or gloss: Many women quickly feel overwhelmed in front of the shelf and ask themselves: Which lipstick is right for me?
A question of skin type and occasion
Good news right away: no matter what skin type you have and what hair color you have, whether your lips are rather thin or full: there is the right lipstick for every type! The prerequisite? You have to know your skin type! That’s right! The chances of finding the perfect lipstick for you are much better if you know your skin type. So before you continue reading, please take the following test: Look at the veins on your wrist. Are they more greenish or rather bluish? If they are greenish, you are a warm type; if they are bluish, your skin has a cool undertone. If you’re still unsure, think briefly about which type of jewelry suits you better: If silver suits you better, you have a cooler skin tone; if gold suits you better, it’s warmer. Does both suit you? Then you belong to the neutral types, who look good in both cool and warm tones. Generally: Women with a cool skin tone look better in bluish shades, warm types look better in yellowish tones.
Which lipstick suits me: dark skin
The good news: Almost any color suits a dark complexion. Whether a strong pink, vibrant red, fuchsia, violet, or orange – the options to highlight your lips are huge. What’s especially important here is the skin tone: If your skin tone has a rather bluish undertone, a bluish purple might make you look sick and tired. On the other hand, red, brown, or purple shades with a yellow undertone make you glow and instantly look awake, healthy, and glamorous.
Dark skin and blonde hair
Do you have dark skin and wear your hair in trendy blonde tones like Beyoncé or Ciara? A strong, dark red or red-brown tones on the lips flatter you and give you instant Insta-glamour. Dark brown or even golden tones may make you look older than you are and take away the radiance potential of your look. Instead, try a creamy caramel or cinnamon tone.
Brown or black hair
A strong Bordeaux red, a dark violet with gold particles, or a red-brown suit you perfectly. If you prefer a more girly look, you can also go for a dark pink. In general: light shades suit lighter skin types better, while dark skin types can’t go wrong with dark shades. So how about a strong chocolate brown or even dark blue?
Dark skin and red hair
Do you have a dark complexion and wear your hair in a striking red? If you also like it bold with your lip styling, you can go for a dark red. A lighter shade might be too bright and contrast too strongly with your hair color. It looks natural and sophisticated with creamy nude or brown shades. If you opt for brown, make sure it’s not too dark, as it can make you look older than you are.
Fair complexion: Which lipstick suits me?
With fair skin, the right lipstick color can make a big difference in whether your complexion looks radiant or rather sickly. Too dark tones quickly make it look translucent and pale, as do too light nude tones. But don’t worry – with a fair complexion, (almost) everything suits you. It’s all about the right shade.
Lipstick for blonde hair
Blonde hair and fair complexion? Red lips are simply THE eye-catcher with red hair. With a little gloss, you add sexiness to your look; kept matte, it becomes a sophisticated statement – hello Taylor Swift! Bright pink, delicate pink, fuchsia, or cherry red also suit you well. You should just be careful with dark purple and brown tones, as these can create too strong a contrast with your fair complexion. Coral and orange tones may also make you look pale and your teeth appear yellowish.
Brown and black hair
Do you have dark hair but a fair complexion? Dark hair types with fair skin look great in strong red shades in the Snow White style. Delicate nude tones also gently emphasize the lips. However, you should avoid dark violet, purple, or fuchsia shades. These make you look pale and are only an option for Halloween. Orange tones also make your complexion look pale and are therefore not a good option for you.
Red hair
The most breathtaking sexy pout upgrade for red hair and fair skin: a red, matte lipstick. Red lipstick with red hair not only looks incredibly exciting but instantly recalls the glamour of old Hollywood divas. A delicate copper or cinnamon, strong pink tones, or natural nude shades also look enchanting. Only dark brown tones, plum, wine red, and apricot tones can make the face look mask-like and unnatural.
Lipstick for the medium skin type
Your skin always looks sun-kissed? But you don’t really get very brown? Then you are the medium skin type!
Blonde hair
Your hair is blonde, but your complexion always has a natural, slight tan? About like beauty queen and supermodel Gisele Bündchen? Gold, caramel, and nougat tones suit you. But a rich pink, peach, or berry tone with warm undertones also looks good on you.
Brown or black hair
With dark or black hair and a medium skin tone, strong dark shades like brown, plum, and fuchsia suit you well. A red with a slightly golden undertone also makes your skin glow. Be careful with lipstick shades that are much lighter than your skin.
Red hair
Soft nude shades and rose tones suit you well. Since your complexion has a healthy tan, nothing makes you look old quickly. That’s why a brown tone on your lips can also be a real highlight. However, be careful with strong red tones. Coral and orange may also not harmonize with your skin and hair color.
Which lipstick suits which lip shape?
Whether you have a small mouth, particularly narrow lips, or one lip fuller than the other: with small tricks, you can quickly smooth out one or the other flaw. Want to know how pros like Kylie Jenner apply their lipstick?
Here’s how:
1. As a base, first apply either a special lip base, a primer, or alternatively some concealer or makeup foundation on the lips.
2. Trace the lip contours with a color-matching lip liner. Even if you long for XXL lips: don’t overdo the extra volume and, if necessary, only cheat by a few millimeters.
3. Then fill in the lips with lipstick. Apply it either directly or with a lip brush. Lip brushes not only have very firm bristles that don’t give way when applying, ensuring a flawless finish. Their brush shape is also slightly angled. This is helpful for applying color right at the outer edges of the lips.
4. Remove the excess color with a tissue or cosmetic wipe by gently dabbing your lips. The advantage? The color now on the tissue can neither smudge nor end up on your teeth.
5. For even longer wear, apply some loose transparent powder to your lips.
6. Apply color again and repeat step 4.
7. For even more volume (optional), apply some concealer or a lighter lipstick color to the center of your lips and your cupid's bow (the highest point of your lips).
8. For a Jenner-style mouth, you can now seal your lips with clear gloss. Done!
Small mouth and narrow lips
Lipsticks with a slight shimmer or lip gloss immediately give the lips shine and thus fullness due to their creamy or gel-like texture. For small mouths and narrow lips, these are therefore ideal; a lip liner for the outer contouring is generally not necessary. Matte lipsticks have the advantage of lasting particularly long and being literally "kiss-proof." In addition, the lip contours can be cleverly enlarged beforehand with a lip liner and then filled in. It is important to apply matte lipstick carefully. The best way to do this is with a lip brush whose bristles are arranged diagonally. This makes it possible to precisely fill in the outer contours as well. The following trick also gives a lot of fullness: dab some concealer or a lighter lipstick color on the center of your lips. Your lips immediately look fuller. For even more volume, then apply a layer of clear gloss.
Full lips – big mouth?
If you naturally have full lips: congratulations! If you don't want to draw too much attention to your lips, creamy lipsticks in delicate nude or rose tones that don't shine too much are very suitable. Very matte, dry textures can also easily be worn by full lips. It is important that you do not paint beyond your lip contours. Do you have a big mouth and want to make it look smaller? Use a darker shade for contouring your lips than the one you use for the inside of your lips.
Dry lips
An absolute no-go: lipstick on dry lips. This usually not only lasts much worse, but also dries out the lips even more. While creamy or glossy textures provide moisture to the lips, matte textures tend to literally "absorb" the natural moisture on your lips. In general: lipstick only looks good on well-cared-for lips! To do this, do a short lip scrub 1–3 times a week. Gently brush your lips with a toothbrush for 1–3 minutes. This not only removes dead skin particles but also stimulates the blood circulation of your lips. Then apply a nourishing lip care – for lips to kiss!
How much should a good lipstick cost?
As you have probably already noticed: lipsticks and lip gloss come in all price ranges. A good lipstick can cost up to 40 euros, but you can already find a good lipstick for 10–15 euros. Lip gloss is somewhat cheaper. For 6–10 euros, you can find products that don’t stick and last relatively long. For a highly glossy look reminiscent of the shine of lacquer or vinyl that also lasts forever, you have to spend more. Lip gloss with such high-quality and long-lasting textures costs up to 30 euros. But what makes a good lip product?
These factors indicate that a good product is in front of you
The feel on the lips is pleasant, not too dry and not too sticky. If you crave your lip balm after just a few minutes, the texture might be too dry and tough. A good lipstick provides your lips with moisture and color without leaving an annoying film. The same applies to lip gloss: it shouldn’t be too sticky. It’s also important that it stays exactly where you want it: if the texture runs, hands off! Whether directly from the tube or with the included applicator – how you apply your lip gloss is a matter of taste. With an applicator, the gloss is usually easier and more precise to apply.
Coverage is important for a perfect color application. Does the color already shine and look even on the first application? Do you feel no need to paint over your lips again? Bingo! Your lipstick then has a high amount of color pigments and will bring you a lot of joy. If the color application is uneven, sheer, and waxy, you should steer clear. The good news? Highly opaque lipsticks are also available in the lower price ranges. The strength of coverage is, of course, a matter of taste: while some women love lipsticks that guarantee an indestructible color application like felt-tip pens for 24 hours, others prefer lighter, sheerer textures that look more like their favorite lip balm mixed with a hint of color.
Durability
The durability goes hand in hand with the coverage. The more opaque a lipstick is, the more sips of latte macchiato it can withstand. Want to extend the wear time of your lipstick? Dab off excess color with a tissue after application and then apply some translucent powder.
